DAYTONA BEACH (CBSMiami / AP) – No good deed goes unpunished, right? Investigators say the 27-year-old Florida man staged an accident on Interstate 95 and then stole a pickup truck from a man who stopped to help.
Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kim Montes said in a statement that 27-year-old Zachary Searles hit a van in front of him on Monday night. Searles’ car crashed into a tree and caught fire. Montes says 52-year-old Felix Coffman stopped by to help. When Coffman got out of his truck, Searles got in and drove off, Montes says.
Volusia County sheriffs ‘deputies say they soon found a truck parked outside Searles’ home and arrested him. He is charged with several crimes, including theft of a large car, and is being held on $ 6,000 bail.
Searles’ lawyer did not appear in the court records.
