The 23-year-old man, who told police he punched the ATM because it gave him too much cash, was arrested after bank officials said the attack caused at least $ 5,000 in damage.
Cocoa police accused Michael Joseph Olexic of Merritt Island on Friday of criminal mischief for nearly a month while investigating riots at the Wells Fargo branch at 834 N. Cocoa Boulevard, Cocoa.
Authorities said surveillance video showed Oleksik standing at an ATM on November 29 and hitting an electronic cashier’s touchscreen.
Some time later, an apologetic Oleksik called the bank and told the manager that he hit the ATM because he was “angry that the ATM was giving him too much money and he didn’t know what to do,” as the records show. Oleksik also said that he was in a hurry to work and apologized for damaging the bank’s ATM.
Wells Fargo contacted the Cocoa Police Department and asked to press charges. Olexik was arrested Friday and taken to the Brevard County jail complex in Sharps.
