DAYTONA BEACH (CBS Miami / AP). The man who ran naked through an airport in northern Florida last year and shouted about the threat of an explosion was sentenced to 10 years probation.
John Thomas Greenwood, 27, was also ordered to pay compensation to airlines affected by the evacuation that left many travelers stranded.
Volusia County District Judge Matt Foxman set the amounts at $ 4,939 for American Airlines and $ 9,500 for Delta Air Lines. He may also be required to pay damages to Jet Blue and the airport, but the amount has not yet been set.
In the early morning of May 11, 2018, Greenwood, dressed only in socks, ran through Daytona Beach International Airport, shouting that a bomb was about to go off, police said. He disappeared before eventually running out of the luggage carousel. The police suppressed him with a stun gun.
The airport was closed for two hours while everyone was evacuated from the terminal and authorities were looking for a bomb.
The judge’s sentence is less than the nearly four years’ imprisonment recommended by state sentencing rules.
Greenwood public defender Ryan Belanger said his client was addicted to Adderall, leading to the airport incident. Belanger said Greenwood suffered a head injury in a 2015 car accident.
