JACKSONVILLE, Florida (AP) – A Florida man could receive a death sentence after being convicted of the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl.
The Florida Times-Union reported that a jury found James Leon Jackson guilty of the 1984 murder of Tammy Welch on Friday night.
The conviction was issued the day after 66-year-old Jackson testified that he did not know Welch and did not harm her. Despite this denial, Jackson had a “Tammy Welch 1984” tattoo on his back. Prosecutors said the tattoo was tantamount to a confession, while Jackson called it a prison prank.
Prosecutors said the autopsy revealed that Tammy was strangled and sexually assaulted. Her body was found outside the apartment where she lived. She was on the street while the family was preparing to move to a military base.
