LARGO, Florida. A Florida man was arrested after police said he deliberately shot down a group of ducklings playing in a puddle.
This happened on Sunday evening, just before 20:00. Police say numerous witnesses saw James Claremont drive his Ford truck westbound on Orange Drive inside a mobile home park in Largo, Florida.
At the time, 11 ducklings were playing in a shallow puddle in the middle of the road with a duck. Two independent witnesses, one of whom was a child, saw Claremont slow down due to a speed bump and then deliberately accelerate quickly towards the ducklings.
Witnesses shouted for him to stop the car so as not to injure the ducklings.
Police said he ran over three ducklings and fled the area to his mobile home across the street.
Two ducklings died at the scene, and one was taken to a local veterinary clinic with a bone fracture.
Claremont denied that there had ever been ducklings on the roadway and was unable to explain why the police saw blood and duck feathers on the wheels of his truck.
Police say he looked very drunk due to slurred speech, red watery eyes and the smell of alcohol coming from him, even two hours after the incident.
Claremont is charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
